Recently I have started dipping into the world of comics and graphic novels after I heard that the most recent reboot of Ms Marvel was the first Pakastani-American Muslim superhero. This new change was exciting, and there was also the news that the new Captain American was going to be Falcon, an African American and Thor was soon to be a woman. Finally, when Archie died after he took a bullet protecting his gay friend, I knew that it was time to jump into the world of comics.
First problem I found was the sheer amount of comic book series out there. If I wanted to dive into the world of a particular superhero, I had no idea where to start, what is good and what is bad. I asked a fellow book blogger (Nylon Admiral), as I knew she was knowledgeable in the world of comics. I have been given a nice long list of Marvel Now comics to try and I am very pleased that they are mainly woman superheroes (the new Black Widow, She-Hulk, Storm).
However I think I am just getting started and I know I have plenty of great series to read. So I thought I would ask for some recommendations. Not just superheroes but I want to explore some interesting comics and superheroes. However I would like to dive into the world of some of the greatest superheroes as well. To help here are a list of comic books series I’m currently reading at the moment, and keep a look out for some reviews in the future.

Your level of pretentiousness will increase with each comic and graphic novel you read. 😀 I don’t really understand the attraction. I had to read Persepolis, and although I appreciated the art and storytelling, I would rather have read just text. The library has a lot of graphic novels these days, so I guess they’re popular. I’d read Ulysses done as a graphic novel – that would be awesome. [Ha, yes, I used awesome in a sentence because I’m trying to be ironic.]
You know me, always striving to be pretentious. I enjoyed Persepolis and have been really enjoying some graphic novels at the moment. They give me a chance to experience a story in a different way and also I can practice talking about art.
Awesome that you’ve checked out Black Widow, I love the art for her series (that and that she has her own series ongoing right now). I’ve really, really, really enjoyed Jason Aaron’s run for Thor: God of Thunder; his storytelling and Esad Ribic’s art has been quite epic 🙂 I’m waiting for the paperback for Skottie Young’s Rocket Raccoon (as the single issues have been selling like crazy and I was too late to put it on the pull list xD) as the first issue was a lot of fun 😀 Oh, and from the DC side of things (because I’m clearly a Marvel reader 😛 ), I’ve been enjoying Geoff Johns’ run on New 52’s Aquaman 🙂
Have you checked out Saga? I didn’t see it in your previous entries under the graphic novels tag…I only read the first issue recently and enjoyed it very much 🙂
I read the first volume of Saga before I started reviewing comics. I enjoyed it but didn’t return to it, for some reason. Maybe I’ll need to reread the first volume so I can review it. I expect a lot more reviews from comics in the future and I might try to get Rocket Raccoon
Aaah, I actually JUST wrote a post on this! (http://abibliophobe.com/review-comic-book-bonanza/) From comments below it looks like you already read Saga, one of the comics I wrote about, but have you read Fables or Rat Queens? Good stuff!
I have a mini review of fable already, not tried Rat Queen yet
