Mother Tongue: English And How It Got That Way

I can absolutely vouch for Dorian Gray and Lolita. The Human Stain by Philip Roth is amazing, and so is Gilead by Marilynne Robinson (it’s a slow start, but truly worthwhile if you stick with it.)
both Dorian Gray and Lolita are on my list already, sitting on my book shelf but will look into the others
Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophie%27s_World
it is a great intro to philosophy, and written as a novelization about a girl called Sophie who is learning about Philosophy.
I really enjoyed Sophie’s World
In the First Circle by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn:

That looks really interesting, I’ve added it to my to-read list on goodreads
